“The man gave names to all the cattle, and to every bird of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for Him” (Genesis 2:20, NASB)
Genesis reveals that God gave man extraordinary capabilities. First, it states that God made man in His image. No other creature has this privilege. Second, God breathed in man the breath of life and man became a living being. Without the breath of life, man was a shell, a body without a mind, a body without a heart, a body without a will. When God breathed on man, God gave man a soul.
Adam named all the birds and the beasts. He accomplished what modern science could not, named all the species in one lifetime. Every year around ten thousand species of animals, birds, or insects are being catalogued. It is believed that there are 7.7 million species of animals alone, not including the insects. Of course, this figure is an estimate. Only God knows how many species He created, and of course Adam knew. Adam named them all and remembered their names. The narrative shows us the tremendous capacity of the mind of man. He memorised millions of names. Moreover, he thought of millions of names, the names that he would call each species.
The fall of man, because of sin, corrupted our souls. However, God did not take back His gift. The Imago Dei, the image of God remained. The abilities remained. We have not named all the species in one lifetime but we continuously rediscover the amazing gift of His image. We surprise ourselves with our inventions: cars, trains, electricity, telephones, radio, cell phones, TV, rockets, medicine, and computers, to name a few. Man’s creativity is not limited to functionality, it also encompasses beauty. God made a beautiful world. Man, in God’s image, continuous to design for beauty.
If any man truly sets his heart in learning something and achieving something, with enough study and persistence, it shall be made possible. Because of the image of God, we have creative power. Let me rephrase that, we have the power to design, create, and to invent. God gave us divine intelligence. Yes, we have divine intelligence. But we must activate it to make use of it. It is a pity if we ignore its existence. No, it is tragic.
Stop Glorifying Ignorance
We glorify ignorance every time we ignore wisdom. How do we ignore it? By not giving attention to it. By not being proactive in attaining it. Wisdom calls upon us to learn, to seek, and to understand. What in particular? The things of God including the world He created. This may found in the Word of God. Let us heed the call of wisdom.
We glorify ignorance every time we accept average. The goal is not average. Average is mediocre. Average is an enemy. The goal is to excel in everything that we do. Good enough is not acceptable. Only excellence is acceptable. We are wasting the gift of Divine Intelligence if we do not strive for perfection.
Unleash the Gift of Divine Intelligence
There is so much that you may contribute to God’s earth and kingdom. However, to unleash it you must do the following: (1) Believe, (2) Rediscover, and (3) Action.
Believe. You possess the image of God within you. The potential within you is endless. The only thing that will limit you is your mindset. If you believe that you are unable to build something of significance then you are right. If you believe that you may affect your world in a positive way, then you have made your first step.
Rediscover. Man lost a sense of his potential because of the fall. However, through the millennia man painstakingly gained back some ground. We have regained much as a species. But as individuals, many of us have not contributed much. It is our duty as God’s bearer of His image to take care of the earth. To rediscover, we must study, learn, understand, and experiment. And hopefully we do so for the good of mankind.
Action. Learning without action is a pile of knowledge. And knowledge by itself does not accomplish anything. Knowledge must be put to action. Divine intelligence was never meant to be hidden. Divine intelligence is meant to be applied. Why are we afraid to act on what we believe in? Are we afraid to fail? Afraid at what others might say? Afraid to be affected?
No one is able to perfectly ride a bike the first time. It is usually awkward at first. Many kids injure themselves trying. But through constant practice, it becomes a reality.
Unleash God’s gift of Divine Intelligence. Don’t be bothered if it feels awkward at first. Press on. It will become a reality.
