Denzel Washington delivered the commencement speech at Dillard University last 2015. “Put God First!” Denzel Washington said. “Everything I have ever accomplished is by the grace of God.” A good number clapped their hands in appreciation. Why not? It is not a popular thing to say in speeches.
Very few in Hollywood would give honor and glory to God. Denzel is one of the few who is not ashamed to proclaiming his faith. Aside from Put God First, he advises the college graduates to “Stick with God.” Put God First and Stick with God are great advises for new graduates because many will try to challenge their faith when they begin working for others. Furthermore, Denzel mentioned about not being afraid to fail, of setting goals, of thinking outside the box, of applying discipline, of consistency, of working hard, and of prayer.
Denzel has won two Oscars for best supporting actor and best lead actor for the films Glory (1989) and Training Day (2001) respectively. He also won a Golden Globe best actor award for the Hurricane (1999). His other hit films include, The Book of Eli (2010), American Gangster (2007), and Crimson Tide (1995).
Some people pray a lot when searching for success but when success is achieved, somehow, some people forget God, or are ashamed to proclaim Him. Let us not be like those who forget God, instead, let us live and echo the message of scripture to PUT GOD FIRST!
Shall we be bold to say to others to PUT GOD FIRST? I hope so. I pray so. Christ was not ashamed to proclaim His father to the world, we should not be ashamed to proclaim Him. Christ dared to lose His life for our sake. It is just right to proclaim Him in every opportunity given to us.
“Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32-33, NASB).
