“The the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7, NASB)
Of all the creatures that God made, man was the only creation that would reflect His image. God did not simply form man, God breathed into man. God’s breath was the breath of life. Before the breath of life, man was dust formed into a likeness of a created being. But there was no life. Man was a body without a soul. More like a corpse than a human being until God gave him the gift of life. God gave man a soul. Without God, man was a lifeless shell, man had no soul. Man is a corpse without God.
The soul of man is what makes man different from all creation. God endowed man with the ability to rationalise, to feel, to desire, and to decide. This ability is beyond what other creatures have. This ability is not based on instincts. This ability is a reflection of the Imago Dei, the image of God.
The body you possess is a shell for the soul. The body decays because of the fall of man. Because of the sin of Adam, everybody is dying. You are dying. We are all dying slowly because of the ageing process. It is part of the curse. However, our identity is not tied to the body alone. When you see a corpse, you see a body without the soul. The true person is not merely the body, the true person was the soul who resided in the body. Your true self is not merely your outer shell, it is your soul. Your soul is comprised of your mind, emotions, and will.
Man’s source of life was the breath of life. Man’s life force comes from God. Man procreated and he passed on the the gift of life. Adam’s descendants possess the same Imago Dei, the same creative powers, the same ability to take dominion, the same ability to take care of the earth, and the same unlimited potential.
Since our souls come from God, we must find our home in God. Man tried to bridge the gap between God and man after the fall of Adam. Man tried to understand God, but his corrupted soul, because of sin, lost its understanding of the Creator. All man’s attempt failed: religion, education, philosophy, and good works. All these futile attempts could not reconnect his soul to the Sovereign. There was no way that man could repair the damage he did to himself. The reconnection only happened through the death and resurrection of the Jesus Christ.
Through Christ alone, our souls may find its home. Through Christ alone, our souls may find salvation. Through Christ alone, our souls will find solace. The soul that seeks God through Christ is the soul that shall be blessed. The one who seeks solace in other means will be disappointed.
If you claim to be a follower of Christ, it is best to walk closely with Him through faith, prayer, worship, meditation, and obedience to His word. When we walk closely with Him, our souls find comfort. If we drift from His presence, our souls will be in turmoil sooner or later.
The soul of man is a gift from God. God is the source of its existence. You belong to God alone. The soul, therefore, may only find solace in His presence. When there is turmoil in your heart, turbulence in your emotions, and confusion in your mind, find a way back to His presence. Only then may you find solace.
